6 Cylinder Engine Types

There are 3 main 6 cylinder engine types: V6, Inline 6, and Boxer 6 with the V6 being the most common 6 cylinder configuration. The V6 has the cylinders mounted on the crankcase in two banks of three cylinders aimed diagonally in a V formation; the inline 6 has the cylinders mounted in a straight line along the crankcase with all the pistons driving a common crankshaft; the boxer 6, also known as the flat 6, has its 6 cylinders arranged horizontally in two banks of three cylinders on each side of a central crankcase.
